Miyazaki Prefecture Information

Miyazaki Prefecture is known as the setting of Japanese mythology, particularly the famous legend of Tenson Kōrin (the descent of the heavenly grandchild). It is also said to be where Emperor Jimmu stayed before unifying Japan, and Takachiho is a popular spot associated with these myths.  

During the Sengoku period, the region was under the rule of the Shimazu clan, and in the Edo period, it had a close relationship with the Satsuma domain.  

 

Tourist Attractions in Miyazaki Prefecture

1) Takachiho Gorge  

 A spectacular canyon with steep cliffs. Visitors can rent a boat to see **Manai Falls** up close.  

2) Aoshima  

 A small island surrounded by unique rock formations known as "Oni no Sentakuita" (Devil’s Washboard). It is home to Aoshima Shrine, a popular power spot for love and marriage.  

3) Sunmesse Nichinan  

 A scenic spot featuring seven Moai statues, officially recognized by the elders of Easter Island.  

4) Udo Shrine  

 A shrine located inside a seaside cave. Visitors throw small undama (fortune stones) into a target for good luck.  

5) Toi Misaki (Cape Toi)

 A breathtaking coastal drive with **Misaki horses**, a breed of wild horses that roam freely in the area.  

6) Miyazaki Shrine

 A prestigious shrine dedicated to Emperor Jimmu, Japan’s first emperor.  

 

Food of Miyazaki Prefecture

1) Charcoal-grilled Jidori (local chicken)  

 A specialty of Miyazaki, featuring juicy **locally raised chicken grilled over a strong charcoal fire** for a rich, smoky flavor.  

2) Kara-men (Spicy Noodles)  

 A type of Miyazaki ramen made with konjac noodles and a spicy broth.  

3) Chicken Nanban  

 A famous local dish featuring fried chicken dipped in a sweet vinegar sauce and topped with tartar sauce.  

4) Miyazaki Katsuo Aburi-ju (Seared Bonito Rice Bowl)  

 A specialty of Nichinan City, where **bonito fish is lightly seared and served over rice with a special sauce.  

5) Mango (Taiyo no Tamago – "Egg of the Sun")

 A premium Miyazaki brand mango, known for its exceptional sweetness and aroma.
